SUMMARY:Saturday Signing – Come and meet author Angie Moon
DESCRIPTION:Angie Moon is a classic rock historian based in England. She is the founder of the classic rock blog The Diversity of Classic Rock\, which is all about the diverse people and sounds of classic rock. She started the blog in 2015 initially as a school project\, but found that she loved researching and writing about classic rock so much that she kept writing about it since then and the blog has expanded beyond the original scope of talking about classic rock musicians of different walks of life. On Angie’s blog you can find book reviews\, interviews\, and deep dives on all sorts of classic rock related topics. She has interviewed musicians like Tony Valentino (The Standells)\, Andy Crofts (The Moons\, formerly in Paul Weller’s backing band)\, Graham Parker\, Mike Peters (The Alarm)\, Arthur Alexander (The Poppees\, Sorrows)\, Rich Mattson\, John Hanlon\, Jim Basnight\, Flare Voyant\, Dea Matrona\, The Fontaines DC\, and many others. She graduated in 2018 with an MA in Journalism from the University of Limerick. While in university\, not only did she write about music\, she also hosted a classic rock radio show called Crazy on Classic Rock. Besides writing and classic rock\, Angie loves travelling\, photography\, collecting vintage clothing\, and spending time with her cat Bowie. \nCrime of the Century is a comprehensive book about classic rock’s connections to true crime cases with over twenty true stories of classic rock musicians and their encounters with murderers\, and musicians who committed murders. Inside the book you’ll find the most famous stories like how The Beach Boys met Charles Manson and how Phil Spector went from legendary producer to convicted murderer. There are stories of how classic rockers encountered some of the most notorious serial killers like The Kinks meeting John Wayne Gacy on their 1965 American tour and Debbie Harry allegedly getting into Ted Bundy’s car in the early 70s. \nYou’ll see how the Manson Family’s classic rock connections run deeper than you thought with their encounters with Neil Young\, John Phillips\, Tony Valentino\, Phil Ochs\, and Frank Zappa. You’ll also learn how classic rockers were only a few degrees of separation from presidential assassinations and attempted assassinations like The Band meeting Jack Ruby\, Squeaky Fromme pursuing Jimmy Page\, and John Hinckley’s encounter with DEVO and how they used the poem he wrote for Jodie Foster as song lyrics. It’s a wild and crazy ride through classic rock history. \nBut believe it or not\, these are all true stories.

SUMMARY:Saturday Signing – Come and meet author Helen Liebling
DESCRIPTION:Come and meet writer and activist Helen Liebling and pick up a signed copy – Nalule’s Travels and Adventures. \nHelen carries out research with survivors of conflict and post-conflict sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) and torture including refugees\, in the African continent and United Kingdom. Since 1998 Helen has worked in Uganda\, Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo\, Rwanda\, Liberia\, and South Africa. \nDr Helen Liebling’s early life of disruption and family separation led to a passion for advocating for the rights of those who survived human rights violations. Her first musical trip to Uganda shaped Helen’s life. She developed a love for Africa\, her people\, traditional music and travel. Enchanting musical stories including wild dancing to 21-key xylophone music in rural Eastern Uganda (Busoga) a chickens on a bus and entertaining in the bars of Kampala and travelling to some of the most beautiful places in the world including African deserts\, mountains and waterfalls. \nShe discovered a love for wild swimming and hopes for the future. Fascinating\, emotional\, and uplifting; This book is a captivating narrative of hardship\, resilience\, and triumph against the odds\, told with passion and clarity by a woman who never gave up! \nThe road in Goma was black\, and rugged\, and difficult to walk on. Benoit\, my Congolese colleague and friend\, informed me that this was due to the fact the volcano had erupted near the town some years back\, and the lava had covered the streets. The streets were heaving with people wearing stunning\, bright colours and bustling with energy\, whilst navigating the spiky road resulting from the volcanic ash. In the distance\, I observed the cause of the road problems and the volcano towering above the town. What was it that led me to this lively region of Africa? All will be revealed.

DESCRIPTION:Sunday 15th September 3-5pm at the Kenilworth Centre \nTwo very different but equally brilliant Debut Novels!  Join us to hear two quite different perspectives on their inspiration\, the writing process and getting published!!  Find out what they’re working on now and what it’s like the second time around. \nSecure your place by purchasing a £5 Book Token* \n*Redeemable on the night! \nTickets available at www.kenilworthbooks.co.uk/meettheauthors \nKenilworth Books in Collaboration with Kenilworth Arts Festival. \nIf cost is a barrier\, complimentary tickets are available. Please call us on 01926855784 or email info@kenilworthbooks.co.uk \nHard by a Great Forest by Leo Vardiashvili \n(AN OBSERVER BEST NEW NOVELIST FOR 2024)\nTbilisi’s littered with memories that await me like landmines. The dearly departed voices I silenced long ago have come back without my permission. The situation calls for someone with a plan. \nI didn’t even bring toothpaste. Saba’s father is missing\, and the trail leads back to Tbilisi\, Georgia. It’s been two decades since Irakli fled his war-torn homeland with two young sons\, now grown men. \nTwo decades since he saw their mother\, who stayed so they could escape. At long last\, Tbilisi has lured him home. But when Irakli’s phone calls stop\, a mystery begins… \nArriving in the city as escaped zoo animals prowl the streets\, Saba picks up the trail of clues: strange graffiti\, bewildering messages transmitted through the radio\, pages from his father’s unpublished manuscript scattered like breadcrumbs. As the voices of those left behind pull at the edges of his world\, Saba will discover that all roads lead back to the past\, and to secrets swallowed up by the great forests of Georgia. In a winding pursuit through the magic and mystery of returning to a lost homeland\, Hard by a Great Forest is a rare\, searching tale of home\, memory and sacrifice – of one family’s mission to rescue one another\, and put the past to rest. \n‘A spellbinding achievement’ FINANCIAL TIMES \n‘Poignant and often painfully comic’ OBSERVER \n‘I gasped\, laughed\, and wept my way through it’ KHALED HOSSEINI \n  \nWhale Fall by Elizabeth O’Connor \n(AN OBSERVER BEST DEBUT OF THE YEAR 2024)\nIt is 1938 and for Manod\, a young woman living on a remote island off the coast of Wales\, the world looks ready to end just as she is trying to imagine a future for herself. The ominous appearance of a beached whale on the island’s shore\, and rumours of submarines circling beneath the waves\, have villagers steeling themselves for what’s to come. Empty houses remind them of the men taken by the Great War\, and of the difficulty of building a life in the island’s harsh\, salt-stung landscape. \nWhen two anthropologists from the mainland arrive\, Manod sees in them a rare moment of opportunity to leave the island and discover the life she has been searching for. But\, as she guides them across the island’s cliffs\, she becomes entangled in their relationship\, and her imagined future begins to seem desperately out of reach. Elizabeth O’Connor’s beautiful\, devastating debut Whale Fall tells a story of longing and betrayal set against the backdrop of a world on the edge of great tumult. \n‘I didn’t want it to end’ – Maggie O’Farrell \n‘Powerful . . . written with a calm\, luminous precision’ – Colm Tóibín \n‘The quiet cadences of Whale Fall contain a deep melody of loss held and let go. It is a gentle\, tough story about profound change’ – Anne Enright \nRESERVE YOUR SPACE HERE FOR £5!

SUMMARY:October Book Club with Natasha Solomons
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our October book club with best-selling author of Fair Rosaline\, Natasha Solomons. A fierce\, feminist and intensely gripping novel that takes everything you think you know about Romeo & Juliet and turns it on its head …\nThe first time Romeo Montague sees young Rosaline Capulet he falls instantly in love. Rosaline\, headstrong and independent\, is unsure of Romeo’s attentions but with her father determined that she join a convent\, this handsome and charming stranger offers her the chance of a different life. \nSoon though\, Rosaline begins to doubt all that Romeo has told her. She breaks off the match\, only for Romeo’s gaze to turn towards her cousin\, thirteen-year-old Juliet. Gradually Rosaline realises that it is not only Juliet’s reputation at stake\, but her life. \nWith only hours remaining before she will be banished behind the nunnery walls\, will Rosaline save Juliet from her Romeo? Or can this story only ever end one way? A subversive\, powerful untelling of Shakespeare’s best-known tale\, narrated by a fierce\, forgotten voice: this is Rosaline’s story. \nJoin us on Wednesday 30th October at 6.30pm at the bookshop for our Book Club Q&A with author Natasha Solomons.
